Aluminium foil is used extensively for the protection, storage and preparation of food and beverages pharmaceutical and other FMCG industries

Aluminium in Packaging - Aluminium is used extensively for the protection, storage and preparation of food and beverages. Aluminium can be rolled into ultra-thin foils which are light, strong and have unique barrier and insulation qualities to preserve food, cosmetics, pharmaceutical products and protect from ultra-violet light, odours and bacteria.

Aluminium Foil is used in a wide variety of applications becauseof its unique combination of properties.

Aluminium's excellent barrier properties give it a great advantage over many other flexible and rigid materials. A very thin layer of aluminium foil - only 6.35 microns in some cases - can render a packaging laminate completely lightproof and liquid-tight. There are many different applications, each making slightly different demands which are met in the form of flexible packaging.

Aluminium's essential properties can be seen below:

Aluminium is used extensively for the protection, storage and preparation of food and beverages. It conducts heat extremely well, making it very energy efficient for preparing and serving both hot and cold food.

Aluminium is also very light, this helps to reduce transportation costs and means it is suitable for packaging applications where weight is important.

Aluminium is used in several types of packaging because of its excellent barrier function, it keeps out air, light and microorganisms in order to preserve the contents.

Foil is less than 0.2 mm thick and is used mainly in the packaging industry for foil containers and wrapping. Foil is also used for electrical applications, building insulation and in the printing industry.

Aluminium foil has outstanding characteristics; it is light, strong, flexible and durable. Solid aluminium is an effective barrier against light, air and water. Foil only onehundredth of a millimetre thick is completely impermeable.

Aluminium can be rolled into ultra-thin foils which are light, strong and have unique barrier and insulation qualities to preserve food, and protect from ultra-violet light, odours and bacteria. Aluminium packages are secure, tamperproof, hygienic, easy to open and recyclable.

Aluminium foil finds its largest use in containers and packaging for food, cosmetics and pharmaceutical products. Aluminium withstands both heat and cold. It's easy to sterilise for food and medical applications. It's an excellent barrier against liquids, vapours and light. It's non-toxic and imparts no taste or odour. It is an excellent electrical conductor. It transmits conducted heat, and reflects radiant heat.

Aluminium Foil Rolling Mills

Cold mills, in a wide range of types and sizes are available; some are single stand, others 3 stands and some 5 stand. Cold rolling speeds vary but modern mills operate at exit speeds as high as 3,000 m per minute and alloys may be cold rolled to thickness of around 0.05 mm.

There are various types of cold rolling mill, and they produce various types of rolled product, with thicknesses as low as 0.05mm. Foil is made by passing coiled aluminium sheet repeatedly between steel rollers, set progressively closer together. Each pass squeezes the foil a little thinner. It takes 10 to 12 passes to make the thinnest foils.

To obtain the very thinness foils, two layers are rolled simultaneously. This "double rolling" results in the difference between the two sur faces - matt and polished - the matt side being the inner side during double rolling. The two layers of aluminium foil are then separated. The resulting large reels are slit to the widths needed for further processing, dependent on the end use required – flexible packaging, foil containers, lidding foils, household foil, heat exchanger foil, laminations for cigarette packaging etc.

In general the type of product depends on the alloy used, the rolling deformation and thermal treatment used in the process as well as careful adjustments to the mechanics and chemistry of the process. Rolling mills are controlled by very precise mechanisms and measuring systems.

Our Aluminium Foil Rolling Mill

We are increasing our Production Capacity from 25,000 mtons to 45,000 mtons in 2008

The Group's has 3 German Achenbach 4-High Non-Reversing 3-Stand Foil Line and Airpure System and auxiliary machineries and its aluminium foil rolling mill is one of the largest and most high-tech thin gauge aluminium foil rolling mills in the PRC. We are now installing two additional local manufactured aluminium foil rolling lines to increase the production capacity of our aluminium foil rolling mill lines from 25,000 mtons to 45,000 mtons in 2008.

On 6 November 2007, the Group has, through its whollyowned subsidiary, Shanghai Asia Company Pte. Ltd., entered into a capital contribution agreement for the subscription of the remaining 5.0% of unsubscribed equity interest in the registered capital of JZLM and a shares acquisition agreement to acquire an additional 43.9% equity interest in JZLM.

Rmb 474,000,000

Total investments in the project to-date. With the completion and installation of two local manufactured aluminium foil lines in 2008, the total investments in the project will reach Rmb 595.0 million.
